The ABGII Modular Femoral Stem and Modular Neck system implanted in 258 hip replacement patients in Australia has been recalled by its maker Stryker due to corrosion problems, the TGA hasannounced.
According to the TGA, the recall is occurring worldwide because of the potential for fretting and corrosion at the join between the femoral stem and the neck component of the ABGII Modular System.
“Fretting and corrosion can result in metal debris in and around the hip joint. If this occurs, patients may experience inflammation, adverse local tissue reactions, hypersensitivity/allergic reactions and osteolysis. Is this metal on metal?
No. This just relates to the femoral module. Apparently the head and the stem are separate modules fitted together and it can corrode where it joins or press fits.
