It seems that cobalt chrome is also part of the knee surgery industry…would this have the same effect as hip replacement problems and cobalt?

You would have to think so.

While I am going to discuss an upcoming TKR with my doctor [having found that the part going into my femur is cobalt-chrome and I already have an implant in my other knee by the same doctor] I did contact Dr Tower’s office directly so I could speak intelligently to my doctor. The lady that answered there was kind enough to tell me that it is when both parts are cobalt-chrome and rub together that problems occur. I don’t exactly know if both parts are but do know that one part going into my femur [thigh bone] will be. However, she felt it would be wise to have cobalt levels done. I fully intended to do this even before I spoke with his office. so I will either ask the surgeon to order one during my pre-surgical screening or I will contact my PCP to get one done. I do not have any other overt symptoms except some memory issue and loss of words at times. Neither of which cause me great deficits in daily living. I just want to be sure.

Is it fair to assume that the chromium-cobalt problems are also inherent in full-shoulder replacement? (I can almost predict your reply). If so, is there a metal OTHER than that, available to use as the replacement? Like old-school stainless steel?

Yes… all the evidence points that way.

Steve, I had a Star ankle put in April 2016. Saw you on Nexflex and had a urine test for Cobalt this morning..Don’t know if I should have asked for chromium test too?? I have metallic taste and numbing tingling feeling. Already had thyroid issues,,but just got dose lowered on my Armour. Had dry eye real bad few months ago..got it all under control. My near vision has gotten worse lately. Hoping they can take this out if necessary and save foot. I love the small print in broucher about metal allergies!!! Isn’t everyone allergic to Cobalt Chromium?? Bitch is I read the Star study before getting surgery and thought to myself it wasn’t a lot of people and the time wasn’t very long?? I had plates and screws in from original injury….I guess on the good side I never had the Mesh implanted!!! Thank the lord above on that one..and bringing your work to my attention…Wish me luck thanks Denise

My son has had a titanium screw in his leg for quite a few years. He had it put in when he was in high school to hold a broken bone together, and he started getting sick in college. Can titanium screws also cause toxicity? If so, it might explain why he has been so sick with no explanation.

You do have to wonder. I have sent your query on to Dr Tower.

Spoke to Dr Tower and his comments are:
I am not aware of any reported cases of systemic metal poisoning from just screws or plates although this might be a rare complication of stainless-steel in patients that are nickel sensitive. In this case the hardware is thought to be TiAlV and so I think it is extraordinarily unlikely that the screw is related to the patients illness.

Thank you! I did find some info that over time titanium can cause illness or allergy and that it may also contain other metals that do the same. Thanks again for all your information on your website. We truly appreciate it!

How do I find out if my wife has this issue? After her knee replacement, she has become unsteady, shaky, and her mind isn’t as sharp as it should be. How can I follow up on this and I need to find if my insurance will cover some of this. Medicare and supplement. Also, how can I find out what type of devices were used on her. She has had 2 knee replacements and rotator cuff surgery. Please reply to my email address.

You will have to ask her surgeon for the operation notes

Thank you. I will do so.
