Hi all,
I just wanted to let as many of you as possible know that the ABC’s 4 Corners program is running a follow up story on the hip implant that has caused my deteriorating health over the last 5 years resulting in 5 major surgeries (with my next to come in 10 days’ time), and sadly the deterioration of my quality of life to the point that I am a shell of the person I have previously been.
The Walking Wounded, reported by Quentin McDermott and presented by Kerry O’Brien, goes to air on Monday 26th May at 8.30pm on ABC1. It is replayed on Tuesday 27th May at 11.00am and 11.35pm. It can also be seen on ABC News 24 on Saturday at 8.00pm, ABC iview and at abc.net.au/4corners.
I am very aware that I am far from alone as I have sent this to a number of fellow patients as well and I do wish all of you the very best. The team behind this program have done a great job and I have been honoured to assist them where I can, it will certainly make a few people understand our situation a little better, but the focus of this program is very much on J&J and what they have done, a further program on the human impact is in the works which I am sure that some of us will get the opportunity to discuss our own experiences.
Please tune into this and can I also beg you to pass this message on to as many people as you can as this has been an important program in showing the extent of what has been done to us and very sadly how a ‘trusted’ medical company has deceived those that their own mission statement (they call it ‘Our Credo’) says are most important to them.
Thank you all for your support over the time for my family and I and I hope that this helps answer the one question I am asked most which is: “How can this happen here in Australia?”.
Please let me know what you all think and as I said, Tell Your Friends!!
If you are outside of Australia you will be able to see it on the Web after a day or two – here

Kind regards,
Stuart and Karrin Cain

thanks Stuart, I have been thinking and wondering about how you are doing, I am sorry you have to have surgery in 10 days time. I hope it goes okay.

Thank you for the post. I’m very sorry to hear again of your saga. It is a debacle. Whilst mine is not a recalled version it does need revising due to unexplained pain, so I have some small experience of what you are going through. I can only wish you all the best and congratulate you on your fight so far. I hope you and your family pull through it all. Regards Andrew (Melbourne)

We’ll done Stuart for having the courage and energy to do this story again when you are suffering so much. It must remain current and in the news. Marvellous that it is and on such a high profile and credible program. I am not a J&J victim, but S&N with a non-recalled BHR, awaiting my revision due to extreme cobalt chromium levels. We can only hope that your story and indeed the story of all affected MoM hip recipients, regardless of brand, stays in the media. I wish you all the best, including for your upcoming surgery.
Andrew I am also in Melbourne, let me know if you want to make contact. I am interested to know what type of hip you have. Perhaps you have told your story on this blog, I will check through.
Best regards Andy

Thanks Andy – I had a Mitch Stryker MoM resurfacing about 6 years ago. It’s not one of the recalled modular types. But it has still given me nothing but trouble. I have been recommended it be revised to a porcelain Corin mini stem. I was due to have it done earlier this month but I baulked as I just couldn’t face the prospect of it. The resurfacing hurt like buggery and we have 3 young kids and no family here. What started as a niggling hip problem has turned into hip revision surgery at age 47. We are in newport near Williamstown – email me at . Cheers Andrew

Thank you Stuart and good luck for your surgery. I am in the Depuy Class Action. Had my revision in 2011 less than 3 years after the Depuy implant operation. I had my other hip done in January 2010 which I had revised 6 weeks later as the surgeon made my leg 20 ml longer than my right. He said I could just build up all my shoes, not a problem. I made him change the length of the stem to make my legs the same.
I have a Mitch Stryker in this hip which continues to give trouble and is being monitored by my NEW surgeon. I am only 65 and after 4 operation I can expect to require 2 more surgeries in the next 10 – 15 years. I am in constant pain but continue to push myself to walk and excersise as the alternative is to give in and stop living. Thank heavens for pain killers and anti-depressents.

Good luck with the op and 4 Corners. It is a very credible programme, well researched and the right interviewer to find the facts and tell the truth not the version the medical profession would have us believe. The sad thing is that there could be many more patients with potential problems. I only discovered mine after making enquiries after the first story and asking for blood tests. It was only then that symptoms I had learned to live with became obvious to me that all was not good. How many more are there?
