How ‘Bout Smith & Nephew

All this data refers to Depuy implants.
What about Smith & Nephew metal on metal implants?
I have been in constant pain since THR surgeries in 2008! My surgeon just pats himself on the back every time he takes follow-up x-rays, saying what a GREAT job he did!
No mention or caution about metal components breaking down and getting into the bloodstream.
Are there any legal actions yet? HELP please!!!
My View:
I have to agree – I had my Smith & Nephew THA in August 2003 – and have had constant pain ever since as I have reported – and I am having my 3 year old MoM hip replaced 1 September with a Zimmer ceramic on ceramic.
S&N class action – I reckon Howard Sadwin would have a view on this too – given the battle he has had just staying alive after his S&N hip replacement and revision.

I would ask for an MRI. I had x-rays,scans, the MRI indicated possible fluids around my hip area. That proved to be correct.
The lawyers, the patient-victems are waiting to see an actual case be tried in our court system.
However, speaking up and communicating with other S+N people will only strenghten our chances of getting the attention it will take in order to prevent this from happening to your family, and other innocent people.

I am 4 months out of a a revision. I had a S&N resurfacing done in 2007. I spent the summer with respiratory problems and no one could find the answer, My leg with the device began to go numb. I went back to the surgeon who suspected fluid build up in the hip joint and surrounding area. Had an MRI blood work and an aspiration of the joint. The aspiration confirmed the fluid in the joint. The blood work came back with elevated chromium and cobalt levels. They scheduled the surgery for 1 week later to remove the S&N resurfacing had to do a total hip with ceramic and plastic. I ended up at an allergy and asthma specialist. They seemed to think the asthma and the metalosis could be related.

I can’t over stress the importance if you have a device problem, become as knowledgable about devices, concerns, studies, actions etc. in other words become your own lawyer. Then you can help your attorney and others, by communicating.
This case is going into unchartered waters, not as simple as hire an attorney and let them go to court and try any lawsuits pertaining to hip problems.
My example is extreme,but it happened no hip, live in a wheelchair, the rest you can read about. I decided I am not going to put up with this sh– anymore. So I’m doing what I know best investigate, ask questions, get documentations of things pertaining to your situation, and don’t give in or don’t give up ” God has brought me to this place in time, and He will bring me through it.”

Karen, you will walk without pain soon I pray.After all we have been through and will continue to go through, it is important that you get all the details as to why, what and when you had issues with your hip replacement. It could be product, Smith & Nephew,is one of several companies that used a metal on metal hip device. There is growing evidence,complaints,etc from patients sufferings.
Some of these problems have been caused, by doctor error, infections, products, however, an MRI may help answer some of your uncertainties. Get answers,and if you question or are not satisfied with answers find a surgeon that can help you determine how this happened to you. First and formost get well. Keep the device, when its removed, don’t accept an answer from any doctor unless you are absolutely confident in their response. If there isan issue, seek legal advice, from an attorney that specializes in medical device law, don’t just engage any attorney.
To date no lawyers, law firms, have taken such a case through the court system from beginning to end. There have been many lawsuits filed in several courts, class action (group) and individual cases, but no verdicts, yet. Several companies have settled out of court.
I have no hip and am confined to a wheelchair. I spend hours each day looking for answers and information. Earl’s site has been a tremendous help.
I feel like I was a lab rat, and I like you and many others never received proper disclosure about these devices, from good to worse case.
It’s all about Market Share and Financing, and not about you or me.
Some of the devices have given many people a second chance with parts of their bodies, and there are those that have had the quality of life taken away.
Remember there are no obstacles that you can’t over come, and will in time be well again, but just as important you stand on your feet and help improve a system that needs a lot of help, and you are compensated.
