About 1,000 patients have filed DePuy lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson over problems with their hip replacements, according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal. These lawsuits have alleged that the company knew about problems with DePuy hip replacements, but failed to properly warn doctors and patients about their health risks.

DePuy Orthopaedics and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, recalled the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System hip implants in August 2010 after reports emerged that the devices were more likely to fail than other hip replacements. One in every eight patients who received one of the two hip implants required surgery to replace the device within five years—more than twice the normal rate of failure.

According to lawsuits against DePuy and Johnson & Johnson, problems with DePuy hip replacements had been known about for years before the recall was issued. The Food and Drug Administration had received nearly 400 reports of hip replacement problems with DePuy implants since 2008. In 2009, the Australian National Joint Replacement recalled the hip replacements because of the increased failure risk associated with the devices.
